I’ve known Yuji since 1994 and was fortunate to work with him many times around the globe.
I learned to admire and respect him. Some people follow textbooks but very few write a textbook. Yuji belongs to the innovative ones who wrote the textbook.
Yuji laid the foundation to the development of American & European stuntmen skills. As a Japanese pioneer with the legendary Alpha Stunt team, his innovative approaches to composing, directing and shooting action scenes redefined “Action” and stunned Hollywood.
Today’s top Hollywood stunt-teams and other teams at the forefront of filming around the world owe their skill to Yuji’s work and teaching.

I was fortunate enough to work with Akihiro Yuji Noguchi early on in my career and
I learned so much from him.
His knowledge of martial arts and action cinema is so vast and he is one of the very best action directors I’ve ever worked with.
Still to this day, the two movies I made with Yuji have some of my very best fight sequences. His camera placement and editing is impeccable. Truly one of the very best!

I’ll never forget! I met “Yuji” the day before my first day of shooting on set of my very first tv show WMAC Masters, the #1 Saturday morning TV Show on Fox in the United States at the time. He was rehearsing a stunt for me as my double doing a front one and a half twisting layout back handspring off a tiny platform on the inside of a dome approximately 15 ft high. After just winning my first World Championship title, I watched him do it twice in a row thinking, woahhhhhh! How freaking cool!!! He was one of my fight coordinators on the show and was essential in helping my transition from competitor to fighting for screen! He helped me so much that season and I was in awe of his skill and tried to soak in all his knowledge of fight choreography.
After the show, I created the first performance training camp for tournament competitors called Camp Chat and hosted it at UCLA in Los Angeles. Yuji came and brought the Alpha Stunt Team to demonstrate and teach our students which was a real treat! Never before did martial arts tournament competitors get to meet the Power Ranger stunt team from Japan and train with them, it was incredible! Their power, precision and dynamic moves and fight choreography blew everyone away!
2 years later I auditioned and booked the role of Chad Lee, Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue Blue Ranger and when I started training to prepare for filming with the other actors and the stunt team I reunited with Yuji! It was an amazing moment! I couldn’t believe it! My dream from when I was a little kid was to go to Hollywood and do tv and film and now, on my biggest show to date, I got to work with my good friend Yuji again!
It was an incredible season and life experience I’ll never forget! Not 12, or 24 but 42 episodes we shot in 9 months! Every day, rain or shine, cold or blazing desert heat, Yuji did what he does best. What I respect and admire the most is the consistency of showing up every day, coming up with original, creative ideas and choreography, working under the fast time constraints of tv and our show format to produce the high level of action that the fans all over the world love with very little time, money, and resources. Any high level choreographer can do great work but very very few can do it under pressure over and over and over again. It’s not like a film where you have 5-7 key fights. We had fights every episode, 42 episodes week after week which was incredible.
I learned what it meant to “know the edit” before shooting as he would just shoot the pieces he needed because he had already worked out how he was going to edit it. I learned how to make my punches and kicks more dynamic for camera, how to make my reactions bigger and sell them for camera. I learned how insanely talented Yuji and his team were yet so incredibly humble and helpful and always so accommodating for me, the other actors and all of the crew. To say it was like a Master Class in action filmmaking is an understatement. That season on Power Rangers with Yuji was one of the greatest experiences of my life as I spent the most time learning action on the job with him and his team than any other job. I was getting paid to learn from the best in the world!
It has been too many years since we’ve seen each other in person and too many miles between us now but I am looking forward to the day when we meet again, maybe collaborate on a project or just have dinner. It was such an honor to have my student Charlie Kersh who played the Yellow Ranger in Power Rangers Once and Always get to work with Yuji recently. I wish I could have come to watch it!
I owe so much of my ability, knowledge and professionalism to Yuji and am so grateful! I was given two Alpha Stunt Team shirts by Yuji. One blue and one gray. I wore them so much until the logos faded away and they started to have holes in the shirt so I finally cut the sleeves off but eventually there were too many holes! I hated throwing them away! I love Yuji for being such an incredible mentor to me and for the legacy that he has created in the Power Rangers Franchise. There would be no Power Rangers action without Yuji and his team! When I think back to my time on Power Rangers, the memories with Yuji were part of my daily experience that I will always cherish!
Yuji – I cannot thank you enough for all that you did for you, the amazing amount of support you gave me and the belief you had in me. It has helped to make me who I am today and I am so proud to call you my friend!
